Exciting 2020 Programme of Events Announced23rd December 2019
The Epping Ongar Railway is delighted to announce it's programme of special events for 2020.
The exciting programme features some new events for 2020, together with many old favourites.
To celebrate Mother's Day on 22 March, the Railway is pleased to offer three special services along our scenic line, offering bruch, lunch or afternoon tea on board one of our heritage trains. Look out for details early in 2020.
The main season starts with our popular "Kids for a Quid" trains during February half term, and will conclude with a new take on Hallowe'en, "Fright Week". August sees two new events as we go back to the 1960s on 2 August and our Family Day on 23 August encompasses a Sci-Fi theme.
Other events aimed at our younger visitors sees the return of Dexter the dinosaur, and the ever popular Peppa Pig and George, Chase and Marshall from PAW Patrol and The Gruffalo.
The Railway will be looking to its buses to provide a colourful start to its enthusiasts season with a rally at its North Weald station on 23 February. The event will feature a number of bus routes in the area, as we celebrate 50 years since the inception of London Country Bus Services, with heritage buses alongside its scheduled route 339 bus services. The 339 bus is unique in being the only scheduled bus operation run entirely with vintage buses in the UK. These buses connect the heritage train services with the Underground at Epping and the mainline at Shenfield.
Classic cars from a wide range of marques and manufacturers will be appearing at two regular and popular shows. The first, coinciding with Fathers Day is held on 21 June, and the second at the end of summer on 30 August. A good selection of small and large steam traction engines, and others, will be visiting the Epping Ongar Railway on 15 and 16 August.
The Railway is keen to attract a wider range of visitors and following continued success in 2019 has increased the number of “Epping Fryer” Fish and Chip trains.
Work has continued on the overhaul of Class 45, 45132, and we are hopeful that the locomotive will finally see a return to service this year. The Railway’s thumper DEMU, 205205, which suffered a near catastrophic failure of its cam shaft in 2017, is now expecgted to return to service in time for the Spring Diesel Gala taking place on 18 and 19 April. Other visitors will be announced in early 2020. The Railway’s Autumn Diesel Gala will be held on 12 and 13 September.
The Steam Gala takes place at the beginning of June, and discussions with a number of locomotive owners are underway. Previous galas have featured 9F, 92214, US Army S160 5197 and Ivatt Tank 2MT, 41312.
Full details of all events will appear on the events page once details are confirmed.
Trains and heritage bus services operate every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from April to the end of October, together with Fridays during school holidays. Services will also operate on Wednesday 15 April. An outline of our events programme can be found below.
