Epping Ongar Railway is8th May 2021
The Epping Ongar Railway is delighted to announce that steam hauled services will return earlier than originally planned. Services between Ongar and North Weald stations will be operated by a steam locomotive over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, 29, 30 and 31 May.
This will mark an important step on the Railway's path to recovery following the coronavirus pandemic which has seen cancellation of its services and popular events over recent months.
Tickets are being sold as single tickets between North Weald and Ongar, and vice versa - passengers will need to buy an outward and return ticket for a round trip of the whole line so can make the most of their day out at their own pace.
The steam hauled services between Ongar and North Weald will be supplemented by a diesel service that will operate from North Weald into the ancient Epping Forest; a journey that offers drivers eye views and a panoramic view of London (subject to weather conditions of course!). To ensure social distancing can be maintained the number of tickets available for each service has been limited, so early booking is advised.
The Railway is the closest heritage railway to London and the longest in Essex.
The Railway's General Manager, Dean Walton, said:
"Along with all the volunteers and staff, I am delighted that steam trains are running once again on the Railway".

The Railway's train services resume on 22 May, with a simple service operated by a diesel train. This service continues after the May Bank Holiday weekend, with further steam services being re-introduced from 27 June. The Railway's programme of popular children's events and enthusiast galas are also expected to resume over the course of the summer, culminating with the extremely popular Santa Special trains and an all new Epping Ongar Light Fantastic in November and December. Details of these events can be found on the events page as plans evolve.
