We’re running a simple service that will continue the process of bringing our heritage railway back to life. For this we need your support more than ever – both to travel on our Railway, and to follow the guidelines so that it is safe for everyone and to encourage your family and friends to come along too.

These services operate on Sundays 6, 13 and 20 June.

Train Services

A journey, conducted at your pace, suited for your family and with our social distancing and hygiene regimes locked into the process means you can be assured that it will be as safe as it can be. The times of the trains and fares can be found below. These services will be steam hauled by locomotive 5619

Diesel services from North Weald into Epping Forest

Our diesel multiple unit train will be operating services from North Weald into Epping Forest. You can only board, and alight from, these services at North Weald. This service offers fantastic drivers eye views as the train travels through the ancient Epping Forest and, if the weather is good, you get a great view of London as you pass over what was the highest point of the London Underground network at Coopersale.

The diesel service is available to holders of tickets for the steam service at no additional cost. You do not need to pre-book the diesel service, and can make the journey into Epping Forest either before, or after, your booked steam service, so do ensure you leave plenty of time!

The steam and diesel services are guaranteed to connect at North Weald.

Picnic Lunch

Under the current restrictions we have devised a simplified menu to ensure that we can continue to prepare good food safely that our customers will enjoy. One of the ways we’re doing this is to offer the opportunity to buy a ready-made picnic lunch for £6.00 per person consisting of either a ham or cheese sandwich, a premium Fentiman's soft drink, a savoury such as mini-cheddars or twiglets and a cake to make up a filling picnic. Please order these at the time of booking and it will be ready for you to collect from North Weald Station on arrival. These packs are not suitable for customers with allergens or special dietary requirements. However, alternative vegan and vegetarian options will be available to purchase on the day, subject to availability.

Why not take the steam train to Ongar, and enjoy your picnic on our picnic tables at the station, before exploring the town and taking a later steam service back?

Picnic Lunch tickets can only be purchased in conjunction with a travel ticket

Face Coverings

In line with government legislation, face coverings must be worn onboard our train services.

The Penny Salon Gallery

We are unable to open the Penny Salon gallery at Ongar station. However, it will be going "on tour" with with a 'taster' display in the North Weald Booking Office area, plus weather permitting, showing folios of steam images from an adjacent Kiosk in front of the station building.

Here are some ideas for your day out with us.

Tour of Ongar

Our trains run every 1hr and 15 mins so you have more than enough time for a look around Ongar. You can read about the history of Ongar, and find out more information about the town.

You can download our own leaflet detailing a walking tour of Ongar Town Centre. To help with social distancing, the route is described both clockwise and anticlockwise. The walk takes approximately one hour and passes some of the historical buildings in the town.

Greensted Church

If you give yourself a good couple of hours then you will have ample time to visit the oldest wooden church in the world (even if it is closed to visitors it is lovely to look at from the outside). Nevertheless it is a wonderful building to see from the outside and the walk to the church is lovely.

No visit to the railway is complete without a visit to our gift shop, which is open at North Weald. We have a wide selection of items available, all of which we have been careful to ensure that we offer quality gifts which appeal to the wider public with items suitable for ALL interests, ages and budgets, as well the more typical railway-themed items. Cleaning and Hygiene

As with all venues there is an increased emphasis on handwashing and cleaning. We have provided hand sanitiser at various locations around the Railway and you are encouraged to wash your hands more frequently. The train will be cleaned whenever it returns to North Weald during the day and also have a deep clean prior to being put into service.

Our toilets and more importantly the surfaces within the toilets, will be cleaned more frequently during the day with relevant disinfectants.

Please help us by using the litter bins for all your waste.
