Journey through the Essex countrysideSelected weekend days in October
Join us on selected Saturdays and Sundays throughout October as we "get back on track".
Take a scenic ride through the Essex countryside and into the ancient Epping Forest on board our diesel multiple unit, which offers panaromic views. See how much wildlife you can spot, and if it's sunny you might be able to get a great view over London as you pass over what was formerly the highest point on the London Underground network!
These services operate on Saturdays 10 and 24 October, and Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October.
For other services in October, follow these links:
- Class 37 diesel running day - 3 October
- Cass 47 diesel running day - 17 October
- Half Term steam services - 28, 29, 30 and 31 October
Building on our August and September services we’re running a simple service that will start the process of bringing our heritage railway back to life. For this we need your support more than ever – both to travel on our Railway, and to follow the guidelines so that it is safe for everyone and to encourage your family and friends to come along too.
Diesel services between North Weald, Ongar and Epping Forest
We’re selling a selection of single tickets between North Weald and Ongar - you will need to buy an outward and return ticket for a round trip of the whole line. A journey, conducted at your pace, suited for your family and with our social distancing and hygiene regimes locked into the process means you can be assured that it will be as safe as it can be. The times of the trains and fares can be found below.
These services will be operated by our diesel multiple unit train. Seats on the train are not reserved but please respect social distancing guidelines. The amount of tickets available on each train is limited to ensure there is sufficent space for all passengers to be socially distanced.
The beauty of our offer is that you will be able to create your own day with us – whether you prefer to spend time on the train and have a picnic at one of our stations, whether you want to take time out to take a tour of the historic medieval settlement of Ongar or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous you could choose a single journey and have a lovely country walk along sections of the Essex Way and other footpaths in the local area.
In line with government legislation, face coverings must be worn onboard our train services.
Here are some ideas for your day out with us.
Round Trip Starting From North Weald
Park the car or cycle or walk to North Weald and enjoy a leisurely tour through the countryside and into the historic Epping Forest. Make sure that you book the correct return trip from Ongar.
Round Trip Starting from Ongar
There is limited parking in Ongar Town Centre and none for passengers at the station. We can look after your bikes though. Again book your outward leg from Ongar and check that you have the correct timed train from North Weald.
Tour of Ongar or North Weald
We can download our own leaflet detailing a walking tour of Ongar Town Centre. To help with social distancing, the route is described both clockwise and anticlockwise. The walk takes approximately one hour and passes some of the historical buildings in the town.

If you give yourself a good couple of hours then you will have ample time to visit the oldest wooden church in the world (even if it is closed to visitors it is lovely to look at from the outside). Nevertheless it is a wonderful building to see from the outside and the walk to the church is lovely.
It is advised that you book a one-way ticket from North Weald to Ongar. Once you are at the station get out your map, walk towards Greensted Church and follow the Essex Way back towards Epping. You will need to turn right at some point to make your way to North Weald. There are a few alternatives some of which will take you past our Railway so that you can see our old and lovely bridges from a different viewpoint. Do check your maps!
A map of the Essex Way can be found here.
Our food preparation areas are tight and whilst they work during normal times we have had to simplify our menu substantially to ensure that we can continue to prepare good food safely. One of the ways we’re doing this is to offer the opportunity to buy a ready-made picnic lunch for £6.00 consisting of a sandwich, crisps, a sausage roll, a cold drink, a cake and a piece of fruit. Please order these at the time of booking and it will be ready for you to collect from North Weald Station on arrival.
Light refreshments are available from our catering outlets at both North Weald and Ongar. Payment by contctless methods is preferred.
No visit to the railway is complete without a visit to our gift shop, which is open at North Weald. We have a wide selection of items available, all of which we have been careful to ensure that we offer quality gifts which appeal to the wider public with items suitable for ALL interests, ages and budgets, as well the more typical railway-themed items. Payment by debit or credit card is preferred, and please observe the one way system.
We have limited toilet facilities at both of our stations but particularly so at Ongar. There is a public toilet and a disabled toilet in the Town Centre at Ongar about 5 minutes walk from the station. Please consider using that if you are planning to spend some time in Ongar.
On account of our ‘one at a time’ policy for the toilets all of them will be suitable for use for men or women or parents accompanying children.
One Way System
We have introduced some one-way systems at our stations, please follow the signs and the requests of our volunteers. You will find that you will be asked to wait for services in particular places so that passengers can alight from our trains before you board.
Cleaning and Hygiene
As with all venues there is an increased emphasis on handwashing and cleaning. We have provided hand sanitiser at various locations around the Railway and you are encouraged to wash your hands more frequently. The train will be cleaned whenever it returns from the Forest during service and also have a deep clean prior to being put into service.
Our toilets and more importantly the surfaces within the toilets, will be cleaned more frequently during the day with relevant disinfectants.
Please help us by using the litter bins for all your waste.
