Enjoy a family day out with a journey through the Essex countryside this October half term, as our steam hauled trains return on 28, 29, 30 and 31 October. All children will receive a free drink at Ongar.
All services will operate as a round trip from North Weald, travelling via Ongar and into Epping Forest. You will be able to alight for approximately 20 minutes at Ongar whilst the locomotive runs round the train ready for the return journey, but you must return to North Weald on the same train. On the return from Ongar there will be a short stop at North Weald whilst another locomotive is attached to the rear of the train, before the train continues into Epping Forest.
You will not be able to start your journey at Ongar station, and no single tickets will be available. You cannot alight from the train at Epping Forest.
We will have a choice of individual compartments for groups of up to 6 people, or seats in our open carriages.
There are no toilet facilities on the train, but the toilets at North Weald and Ongar will be open.
Our catering facility at North Weald will also be open selling a selection of light refreshments and hot and cold drinks. as will our Souvenir shop.
Services operate on 28, 29, 30 and 31 October. Four departures will operate each day:
- 10.00, arrive back 11.20
- 11.40, arrive back 13.00
- 13.20, arrive back 14.40
- 15.00, arrive back 16.20
All services depart from North Weald station. You cannot start your journey at Ongar.
Getting to us
Car parking will be available at North Weald station (Postcode CM16 6BT) with easy access from the M25, M11 and A414.
There will be no heritage bus connections running for this event.
The following great value fares apply. All tickets must be booked in advance. There will be no tickets available on the day.
Private Compartment for up to 6 people: £70
Child (aged 3 and over): £10
Children under 3 are free - no ticket needed.

To ensure social distancing is maintained a limited number of tickets are available for each train. In accordance with Government legislation, face coverings must be worn, unless you are exempt, in open seating. Passengers who book a private compartment may remove face coverings whilst in their compartment.
Passengers are asked to arrive no earlier than 30 minutes prior to the departure of their train.
From 1 October 2020, cash will no longer be accepted as a means of payment. Debit and credit card and contactless payment is welcomed.
Services are planned to be operated by Great Western Railway "Hall" class locomotive, 4953 "Pitchford Hall". Every effort will be made to operate services as advertised but the Epping Ongar Railway reserves the right to substitute diesel traction in unavoidable circumstances. No refunds will be offered in the event that diesel traction is substituted.
