160th Anniversary Weekend and Ongar Town Festival3 and 4 May

We mark the 160th anniversary of the opening of the railway line from Loughton to Ongar, alongside the Ongar Town Show! 

Our grade 2 listed Ongar station has been restored to Great Eastern colours providing a fitting tribute to the "end of the line".

Class 20 diesel locomotive 20227 hauls a train into North Weald station Steam locomotive 4953 Pitchford Hall

We expect two steam locomotives from our home fleet, together with class 20 diesel locomotive, 20227 and class 47 diesel locomotive, 47635, to be in action across both days.

Our vintage London bus services will also be operating providing connections to Epping Underground station (Central Line, zone 6) and Shenfield station.

Ongar Town Festival - Sunday only

On Sunday 4 May we join with the Ongar Town Festival - now in it's 6th year! 

We have a special fare offer for those who want a train journey during their visit to the festival, or you can join one of our "Brake Van shuttles" for a short 10 minute journey in the guards brake van hauled by one of our small shunting locomotives. 

The Festival also features a number of activities throughout Ongar town, including: 

  • Live Music Performances
  • Performances from local dance and gymnastic groups
  • Arts & Crafts Stalls
  • Food Stalls featuring Local Cuisine
  • Family-Friendly Games and Activities
  • Dog Show

Of course our heritage train and vintage buses will be operating too! What better way to make your way to Ongar than via the Epping Ongar Railway!

Getting to us

You can start your journey at any of our stations, or on the vintage London bus service from Epping Underground or Shenfield stations. 

It's easy to get to us via the London Underground. Our inclusive vintage London buses will run from right outside the front of Epping Underground station (Central Line, zone 6), connecting with our train services at North Weald station. Buses also depart from Shenfield station for connections with Elizabeth Line and Greater Anglia services.

There is only limited car parking for disabled passengers at our stations, which must be booked in advance. Public car parks are available in Ongar (charges may apply), a short walk from the station (use postcode CM5 9AB); Alternatively passengers may park at Epping Station (charges apply) and join our vintage London bus service (use postcode CM16 4HW). 

The bus services are included in your great value fare.

Additional Attractions

Take a ride in the "Brake Van shuttle".

Take a short ride in the guards brake van at Ongar, hauled by one of our shunting locomotives. This ride is free of charge but donations towards railway restoration projects are welcomed. A maximum of 20 people can be accommodated on each trip which will operate frequently between our main train service at Ongar.

 

Additional vintage bus trips from Ongar (Sunday only).

We expect to be able to offer additional bus trips from Ongar station for the short journey to Greensted church throughout the day.

 

The Penny Salon Gallery at Ongar Station

The Penny Salon Gallery will be open showing a photographic exhibition titled 160 years of the railway to Ongar featuring the varied fortunes of our unique railway, the only heritage line to have been electrified. Admission to the gallery is free so why not take a look during your visit?

 

Heritage Train and vintage bus times

A frequent service will operate to and from Ongar between 10am and 4pm on both days, featuring both steam and diesel locomotives. Connecting vintage London buses will provide connections to Epping Underground station (Central Line, zone 6) with some buses also operating to Shenfield. Detailed times will be available shortly.
