S160 announced as first visitor for Steam Gala1st January 2018
We are delighted to announce the first visitor for our steam gala! United States Army Transportation Corps S160 class, number 5197 will be starring at the event from June 8 to 10.
The loco will be working trains over our challenging gradients, some of the steepest and longest in preservation, between Ongar and Epping Forest during all three days of the event.
It is expected that the locomotive will be joined by other visitors, still to be announced.
The S160 is a 2-8-0 locomotive designed for heavy freight work across Europe, with a large number of the type deployed in Great Britain - although 5197 was exported directly to China where it remained until rescue for preservation in 1995. 5197 is normally based on the Churnet Valley Railway, and visits courtesy of the CVR and the owners Batt Holden Limited.
