Welcome to Epping Ongar Railway

Train in Sunset

This is the official web site of the Epping Ongar Railway Volunteer Society

You've arrived at the website of the Epping Ongar Railway. The site gives you information and the latest news and developments at the railway as we work to re-open the line.

Our team of volunteers have been working hard to upgrade our infrastructure, buildings, track, signals and also the rolling stock that will allow us to provide a locomotive hauled train for both visitors and locals, within an authentic heritage railway atmosphere.

The railway was part of a 10km stretch of the end of Great Eastern, latterly LNER and London Central Line that runs through beautiful Essex Countryside. After closure in 1994, the line was preserved for use as a heritage railway. A service ran from 2004 till 2007, but it was decided that we would focus on upgrading the infrastructure to improve safety, ensure the long term future of the line, and to enable locomotives to once again operate.

Our enthusiastic and friendly team have work parties both on weekdays and weekends as we bring our dream alive. If you would like to join us in our work to bring back a service as soon as possible, (which could happen during 2010 with sufficient volunteers), please get in touch.
